Neurofeedback Techniques for the Treatment of ADHD Children and Juveniles
At INTEGRA, we firmly belive that youth counselling needs a shift from the “medical model” to the “social model”. While the medical model regarded the individual as restricted because of his disability and required individual "correction", mainly based on pharmaceuticals, the social model assumes that the individual can be empowered with approaches that remove barriers through support mechanisms.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders. It affects both children and adults and is characterised by symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and sometimes hyperactivity.
Usually, ADHD is treated with drugs that are psychostimulants. They are expensive and have detrimental side effects. Kids are prescribed them young and often kept on this regimen for years. Also, they are frequently abused.
Our alternative: We let people with mental health concerns play video games! Of course they are special video games that show how their brain works and that ultimately can also change the way how the brain works. This is achieved through neurofeedback that uses electroencephalography (EEG) activity to provide a signal that can be used by a person to receive feedback about his/her brain activity.
